Wild Bird Wednesday - Nesting Violet-Green Swallow

Violet-Green Swallow perched on a wire outside the nest box.

Violet-Green Swallow exiting the nest box with partner flying by.

I have a Nest Box Camera this year, one of them spent quite a bit of time in it today. One of them (mama I assume) came in 6-7 times and spent anywhere from 1-3 minutes inside fluffing the contents.

This picture is from 2014, the last of the babies to fledge. It spent well over 24 hours with it's head poking out and mom and dad flying by encouraging it to jump.
I hope to get an inside view of this family this year.

  5. So jealous - I want a bird cam! It's great to see a different swallow species - I live near San Juan Capistrano which is famous for the swallows that return every year in huge numbers, but I believe they are barn swallows and not the violet green. I'm getting more and more into bird watching so I'll have to check out the Wild Bird Wednesday situation, too!

    1. It depends where I am as to what camera I use. Most of the time I use Canon PowerShot SZ50HS because it small and light weight but zooms like crazy. If I'm at the window in my house I have a tripod set up with my NikonDX with a 50MM lens on it, that rarely moves now that I have my little Canon. The nest box camera I got on Amazon, the box came with the camera already mounted. Just had to figure out how to get it to do what I want. I'm lucky to have the tv in the house so I can watch it any time I'm home.

    2. Wow - so cool. I'll have to check out the box/camera combo. Sounds like your Canon has better zoom than mine does, too.
