World Bird Wednesday

I started the weekend visiting friends at Big Lake
and got what I think is my first picture of a Downy Woodpecker!
Not the best picture of this little Downy at the feeder, but I love it!

And here is the Downy sharing the feeder with a female Grosbeak.

A gorgeous Goldfich way up in the top of a tree!

I saw a few Bald Eagles while out on a paddle boat but of course I didn't have my camera with me.
I'd be a little nervous to have my camera with me out there and not sure I could get a good picture while floating on the lake.

Now back to my home feeder!
First I'll say I saw what I thought was a Pileated Woodpecker
First I heard it's distinctive call, and right as I spotted it on the side of a big dead tree
a crow flew up and off it went.
I didn't even have a second to run for my camera,
I would have needed alot more than a second to run across the length of the house and get my camera to a spot to take a picture. But I know it's out there!!!!

But here are some shots I did get!

I believe this is a female Grosbeak.

I'm sure somebody can tell me what this one is...some kind of sparrow?

One of the beautiful Black-Headed Grosbeak posing nicely for the camera.

The Grosbeak not posing nicely, but I like this shot because you can see so much yellow under the wings.

I got so many great shots of this Stallar's Jay,
I liked this one because you can see the little spots of blue above the beak I didn't know they had.

A little sparrow, so cute when they perch in the chain link.

And a Junco joined the sparrow at the chainlink.

  7. Love the photos, Kristi! Stellar's Jays are so elegant, a favorite bird, and you sure captured the elegance in your photo. Not 100% sure, but am thinking the unidentified sparrow is a Song Sparrow. They're highly variable from region to region but the coloration looks right for your area. Thanks for sharing your beauties!

  10. I love your Grosbeaks, they are gorgeous. birds. The Downy Woodie was always one of my favorites. I think the one you are questioning is a female Black-headed Grosbeak. They are pretty. Great shots, I am envious of your feeder birds. Thanks for sharing on WBW.
